ARUSHA: The State Council participated, as part of the Council of Oman delegation, in the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in the city of Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

Under its general theme, "Enhancing Good Governance and Empowering Communities Through Inclusivity, Trust, and Opportunities for All," the General Assembly discussed a number of issues related to governance, community participation, international peace and security, sustainable development, democracy, and human rights.

Dr Shamsa bint Masoud al Shaibani, Member of the State Council and Member of the IPU Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, affirmed in a speech delivered during her participation in the committee's meeting the Sultanate of Oman's support for efforts aimed at safeguarding human dignity and promoting peace, justice, equality, and fundamental rights and freedoms, pointing out that human beings represent the core and goal of development, as embodied in Oman Vision 2040 through the priority of human and society.

She highlighted the importance of moving beyond talking about human rights to achieving a tangible impact on human life and translating recommendations into actionable and measurable programs that enhance child security, fairness of opportunities, safeguarding labour rights, empowering persons with disabilities, and enabling youth to participate in shaping their future, emphasising that dialogue, understanding, and international cooperation represent the ideal path to addressing challenges and promoting peace and stability.

The State Council also participated in the 218th Session of the Governing Council of the IPU, which discussed several topics related to the IPU's work, organisational and administrative matters, and electoral dues, as well as exploring ways to enhance cooperation among member parliaments.

The participation also included the meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP), which discussed exchanging expertise and practices in managing parliamentary institutions, developing working methods, and strengthening cooperation among parliamentary bodies and services.

The State Council delegation included Khalid bin Ahmed al Saadi, Secretary-General of the State Council, and Dr Aisha bint Said al Ghabshi, as part of the Council's keenness to enhance its presence in international parliamentary forums, exchange expertise, and learn about best practices in parliamentary and legislative work.

The State Council's participation reaffirms the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting dialogue and exchanging expertise among parliaments, as well as contributing to the discussion of issues of mutual interest, thereby enhancing the Sultanate of Oman's presence in international parliamentary forums and supporting joint parliamentary efforts in service of peace and sustainable development.
